In the News: The Long Road Fostering Educational Culture

Across much of Canada’s North, school absenteeism is at about 50%, and 75% of Inuit students do not complete high school. Systemic issues include poor teacher retention, low numbers of Native educators, and lack of Federal support; however some school initiatives are showing great promise in the North, specifically those that include parents. Parents who went to residential school often hold negative views of education, and without communication between the school and parents, it is much easier for children to drop out.
